We Have Chickens!!!

When we bought the house, the owners had chickens, and that just seemed perfect to me. They took theirs with them of course, so we were left to create our own chicken coop and buy our own chickens. Josh was not quite as enthusiastic as I was, so building a coop was my task. Knowing my limited amount of time, I realized I just had to throw something together, with some plans but without any accuracy. We used the left over wood the Strongs (previous owners) left, and I threw something together. With some minor changes to the original plan, I was able to build something that would fit 6-8 chickens and might be able to stay up for a little while! Excellent! After many months, we finally built the nesting boxes, with which the Boefjes were both able to help.

We bought 6 little chicks of different kinds, one for each one of our family members, so sweet. Unfortunately, they were a  little too accessible for the little ones, and although they were very fond of our sweet chicks, several chicks were less than fortunate. After buying some more to make t to 6 chicks again, the chicks started growing and finally after almost 7 months, they started laying eggs. It was pretty funny, as I had a birthday lunch with some sisters of the ward who also had chickens, and theirs had been laying eggs while ours hadn't.  Initially I thought perhaps we had roosters after all, but the sisters were encouraging. Then the next day we had our first egg! I was convinced for more than a week that one of the sisters felt pity on me and decided to leave one of their eggs in our nesting boxes for us! How nice. We now realize that most of our chickens are laying! Yeah, 4-6 eggs/day is nice!!! The eggs are yummy too!
